Native American Jet Turquoise Sterling Silver Fetish Necklace. What a necklace! This is truly an elegant work of wearable art. This is a top quality necklace with large masterfully hand carved fetishes of block Black Jet. This is a captivating work of art with a menagerie holding hand carved turtles, horses, bears, birds, and fish. These fetishes were carved from designs created in our shop. Artists Tom Joe, Larry Cisco, and Les Johnson all had a hand in creating the designs. The fetishes have been strung with a large portion of matching block Jet heishi. Sky blue block Turquoise heishi beads provide small winks of color throughout the necklace. Sterling Silver cones adorn each end. Strung in our shop by Navajo Indian jewelry artist Berlinda Begay. The total length is 28-1/2". Jet, also known as ‘Black Amber’, is typically made from a compact velvet lignite coal that was formed from tree fossils. The chemical composition is mainly carbon with touches of oxygen and hydrogen. It is used as a gemstone due to its ability to be well polished. Jet was worn by the people of the Victorian era as a gemstone of mourning due to the loss of Prince Albert. From that time on, Jet has been the primary gemstone for almost all mourning jewelry.
